Murano is an island in the Venice Lagoon north-east of the city along the Marani canal.
In 1295 it was decreed that the Venice glassworks be transferred to Murano to prevent the fires that often because of the high temperatures of the ovens took their toll on the, mainly wooden, surrounding architecture.
Hence the splendour and prestige of the glassware, that has become famous throughout the world, was born. Vases, glasses, cake stands, fruit stands, ornaments, statues and jewellery.
Murano actually still proudly creates large chandelliers and other items exported worldwide.
Murano is also home to:
Then Burano must not be forgotten, the lace-making island and the splendid Torcello where you can see its church and the Throne of Attila.
